Colonel Robert L. Hodgson is the Chief of Staff for the 28th Infantry Division. Prior to his appointment of Chief of Staff he was the commander of the National Guard Training Site – Fort Indiantown Gap. In this former position, he was responsible for the day-to-day administration, scheduling and training programs at Fort Indiantown Gap Training Site. Col. Hodgson assumed this position as Garrison Commander on May 22, 2005.
Col. Hodgson was born in Grove City, PA, June 23, 1955. He graduated from Central Dauphin High School, Harrisburg PA, in 1973. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Clarion State College in 1977 and a master’s degree in strategic studies from the United States Army War College in 2004. He is also a graduate Officer Candidate School at the Pennsylvania National Guard Military Academy (1983), the Quartermaster Officer Basic Course (1984) and the Field Artillery Officer Advance Course (1987).
Col. Hodgson enlisted in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard in 1979, serving in Headquarters Battery, 28th Infantry Division Artillery. He held various enlisted positions before becoming a supply officer for Detachment 4, Headquarters, State Area Command in May 1983.
Following this position, he joined the 1-108th Field Artillery, where he branch transferred to field artillery and served as battalion fire direction officer, battery commander, executive officer and battalion commander. He served as assistant operations office (S3) under 28th Division Artillery Headquarters, and then assistant logistics officer (G4), and logistics officer (G4) under 28th Infantry Division Headquarters, to include a deployment to Bosnia-Herzegovina as the logistics officer (G4), Headquarters 28th Infantry Division Forward.
Col. Hodgson accepted a full-time position with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard in the United States Property and Fiscal Office in April 1980. He served in various positions including: payroll clerk, accounting technician, and examiner. He then accepted a position as an administrative officer with the 108th Field Artillery in August 1985, where he served until April 1996 when he accepted a position as administrative officer at 28th Division Artillery Headquarters. He served in this position until January 1997, when he became the logistics management specialist at Headquarters, 28th Infantry Division. He then moved on to become assistant surface maintenance manager at Fort Indiantown Gap in June 2002, a position he held until March 2005, when he became training site manager. He was promoted to his present rank March 24, 2005.
Hodgson’s military awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with three bronze oak leaf clusters; Army Commendation Medal with bronze oak leaf cluster; Army Achievement Medal with two bronze oak leaf clusters; Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal 6th Award; Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device; National Defense Service Medal with bronze star; NATO Medal; Army Service Ribbon; and Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon.
Col. Hodgson is married to Nancy Heller and they reside in Harrisburg. They have two sons, Daniel and Sean, and one daughter, Emily.
