Colonel Joseph A. Laneski was assigned as Chief of Staff, Joint Headquarters January 2, 2004. In this position, he provides oversight and coordination of all staff and command actions at the joint headquarters, as well as serving as liaison between the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, the Governor’s Office and other state and federal agencies. Prior to his assignment as the Chief of Staff, Col. Laneski was the plans, operations and military support officer for the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. In this full-time position, he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Pennsylvania National Guard’s Emergency Operations Center. He also maintained oversight of the directorate of logistics of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.
Col. Laneski was born in Scranton, PA, and graduated from Bishop Hannon High School, Scranton, in 1968. He attended the Electronic Computer Programming Institute, Wilkes-Barre, PA.; and Luzerne County Community College, Nanticoke, PA. He earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA.
He is a graduate of the Officer Candidate School, Pennsylvania Army National Guard Military Academy, and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the infantry branch in 1972. He has completed the Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Ft. Benning, GA.; and the Command and General Staff College, Ft. Leavenworth, KS.
Col. Laneski began his military career in the Pennsylvania National Guard’s 2nd Battalion, 109th Infantry, Scranton, holding various company grade assignments as medical platoon leader, rifle platoon leader, mortar platoon leader, company executive officer and headquarters commandant. Staff assignments include battalion personnel officer, operations officer and logistics officer.
Col. Laneski accepted a full-time position with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard as logistics officer for the 55th Brigade in 1985. He served in that position until 1989, when he was selected to fill the role as command logistics officer at Headquarters, Pennsylvania Army National Guard, where he served until his appointment as the Fort Indiantown Gap Training Site transition team leader in April 1997. He subsequently transferred to Detachment 4, Headquarters, State Area Command, as garrison commander of Fort Indiantown Gap from Oct. 1, 1998, to May 5, 2002. Upon completion of his command assignment, he was transferred to the headquarters’ staff as the director of logistics until March 1, 2003, when he was given dual responsibility, with the primary focus upon the Plans, Operations, and Military Support Office, as well as oversight responsibility for the director ate of logistics. He was promoted to his present rank April 6, 2000. Col. Laneski retired in 2007 from the military.
Col. Laneski's military awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal with oak leaf cluster, National Defense Service Medal, Pennsylvania Distinguished Service Medal, Pennsylvania Meritorious Service Medal, Pennsylvania Service Ribbon, Pennsylvania Twenty-Year Service Medal, Major General Thomas R. White Medal and General Thomas J. Stewart Medal.
Col. Laneski is married to the former Sharon A. Skrobiszewski and they reside at Fort Indiantown Gap, Annville, PA. They have three daughters: Mrs. Nora Knott, Airman First Class Sara Laneski and Jessica Laneski.
