Major General Daniel J. O'Neill

Major General Daniel J. O'Neill became deputy commander, State Area Command (STARC) October 10, 1994. In this position he supervises operations for the Pennsylvania Army National Guard and, upon the absence of the adjutant general, acts as his official representative.

General O'Neill has over 35 years of commissioned service. The Pleasant Mount, Pa., native and longtime Honesdale resident received his commission in the Military Police as a distinguished Reserve Officer Training Corps graduate from the University of Scranton in 1959. After attending the Military Police Officer Basic Course, he served on active duty as a platoon leader in the 716th MP Battalion at Fort Dix, New Jersey. In 1961, he joined Company E, 1st Battle Group, 109th Infantry, Pennsylvania Army National Guard, where he served as a weapons platoon leader. Subsequent to his next assignment, he attended the Infantry Officers Advanced Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, and continued his career with assignments in command and staff positions in the 55th Infantry Brigade, to include command of Company A, 1st Battalion, 109th Infantry (Mechanized), Honesdale, Pa. In 1974, General O'Neill attended the United States Army Command and General Staff College; later completed the National Security Management Course in Washington, D.C., and in 1984 graduated from the United States Army War College. After several staff assignments as a plans and training officer and executive officer, he went on to command the 1st Battalion, 109th Infantry (Mechanized). In February 1984, he assumed the duties of 55th Brigade commander. In May 1987 General O'Neill was appointed assistant division commander for maneuver. He was appointed commander of the 28th Infantry Division December 1, 1989.

   

General O'Neill is presently superintendent of schools of the Wayne Highlands School District. He holds a bachelor of science and masters degree in education administration from the University of Scranton, Pa., a guidance degree from Penn State University and a superintendent's Letter of Eligibility from Lehigh University in 1977. General O'Neill was a teacher at Susquehanna High School and assistant principal at Honesdale High School from 1969 to 1972. In 1972 he became the principal at Honesdale High School. He entered his present position in 1989.

General O'Neill is a member of numerous civic and
charitable organizations. He is currently chairman of the Wayne Memorial Hospital Authority Board, a member of the board of directors Wayne County Bank, and is an instrument rated pilot. He also has been inducted into the Northeast Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

General O'Neill's awards and decorations include: the Army Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, the Army Reserve Components Medal and the Army Service Major Ribbon. He holds the Pennsylvania Meritorious Service Medal, the Pennsylvania Service Ribbon, the Pennsylvania 20-Year Service Medal, the Major General Thomas R. White Ribbon and the General Thomas J. Stewart Medal.

He is married to Dr. Alice O'Neill and has four children: Dr. Kelly O'Neill, Erin Shine, Sandra Rickard and Lt. Michael O'Neill.
